Game Day in NYC: Notre Dame vs. Marquette

Mar 14, 2013, 2:26 PM EST

The 24th-ranked Notre Dame men’s basketball team returns to Madison Square Garden tonight against #12 Marquette in a BIG EAST quarterfinal matchup.

On Wednesday, the Irish defeated Rutgers, 69-61. If you missed that one, Fighting Irish Digital Media has got you covered with highlights and the latest Irish Connection going inside the victory.

With Notre Dame and Marquette heading to different conferences for the 2013-14 season, the future of the longstanding rivalry is somewhat uncertain. The Irish currently lead the all-time series, 80-37. The teams last met just 12 days ago in Milwaukee, with the Golden Eagles topping the Irish, 72-64.

Despite their history, tonight’s game will be just the second BIG EAST tournament meeting between the two programs. In the 2008 quarterfinals, #6 seed Marquette defeated #3 seed Notre Dame, 89-79. This evening, it’s the Irish looking for the #6-over-#3 upset. A win tonight would give Mike Brey‘s squad its fourth consecutive appearance in the semifinals.

It all tips off on ESPN about 20 minutes after the conclusion of the 7 pm Villanova-Louisville game. Look for the Irish to begin at about 9:30 pm ET. If you can’t watch, you can also listen live on UND.com.

And if you’re looking for a good omen, Pat Connaughton who scored 21 points in last night’s win, hit the end-of-practice half-court shot for the second day in a row at The Sports Club/LA earlier this afternoon.
