Second-ranked Irish Dominate #10 Cardinals

Feb 11, 2013, 11:47 PM EDT

No overtimes were necessary at Purcell Pavilion tonight. The second-ranked Fighting Irish controlled the game from the opening tip, and then pulled away in the second half, on their way to a 93-64 victory against #10 Louisville.

Forty-eight hours after the schools’ men’s squads battled in a five-overtime epic on the same floor, the Notre Dame women played one of their most complete games of the season, leaving no doubt for the crowd of 8,368.

Natalie Achonwa led Notre Dame with 22 points and 12 rebounds, good for her 13th double-double of the season.

Skylar Diggins finished with 21 points and seven assists, while Kayla McBride (15 points), Jewell Loyd (12) and Ariel Braker (10) also finished in double digits. Loyd grabbed nine rebounds, coming up one shy of the second double-double of her young career.

Also worth noting, with the victory, Diggins and fellow co-captain Kaila Turner became the winningest senior class in program history. The duo has now won 118 games in a four-year span.

Additionally, Notre Dame’s 23-1 start matches the best ever for the Fighting Irish, who improved to 11-0 in BIG EAST play.

After the game, head coach Muffet McGraw was honored for picking up her 700th career victory last week at Villanova. Tonight’s was win #702 for McGraw, and with her contract signed through the 2021-22 season, we can hope to see many more for the 26th-year Irish head coach.
